Cholesteric liquid crystal film on glass

A cholesteric liquid crystal film was deposited on glass and then allowed to dry. Shrinkage and cracking of the polymer during drying exposed the substrate in portions of the surface. AFM scans showed remarkable contrast between the highly rich surface texture of the top side of the film (shown here) and the rather featureless glass underside (not shown).
